I'm a Long Island Painter. I work primarily in oils and paint both on location - "en plein air" and in the studio - "en basement air".
I began painting seriously in 1994 and in the past few years have been working at it full time. Throughout the years, my work has been displayed in galleries and museums and is in many private collections.
When people look at my paintings, I often hear that they enjoy both the sense of light and color in them. My goal is to combine these qualities with a type of subject matter that conveys an unusual mood and/or perspective. On the surface of the canvas, I like the look of brush strokes in my paintings and prefer to lay the paint on more heavily than not.
As for my influences, I have always admired Hopper. I also admire an artist who lived just down the street from me here in Stony Brook during the 1800's named William Sydney Mount - both of these artists where able to convey a sense of mood by painting the people and places of their world. Their work reminds me of a frame from a very fine movie. This is the path I'm interested in exploring in my current work. I have to say that my biggest artistic influence comes from my family. My folks and my brother are all artists. My Dad's a sculptor and former College Art Professor. My Mother owned an art gallery for many years. And my brother is a toy designer and builder of the world's finest paper making machines. He's also a very good painter.
